The Assembly of European Winegrowing Regions (AREV) would like to warmly congratulate Mr Christophe Hansen on his appointment to the post of Commissioner for Agriculture.
This new mandate comes at a crucial time for the future of European winegrowing, when many challenges will have to be met collectively. The new Commissioner’s mission will be essential: to meet the expectations of winegrowers, consumers and European citizens on key issues. More than ever, the issues at the heart of our concerns are the sustainability of European winegrowing, the sustainability of rural areas, the defence of winegrowing cultures and winegrowing sovereignty, and support for initiatives to renovate and adapt the winegrowing sector in the face of environmental, economic and societal changes.
The new political, environmental, social and public health constraints must be approached pragmatically, without preconceptions, in order to find innovative, viable and consensual solutions for all players. AREV therefore invites the Commissioner to work hand in hand with producers, bearing in mind the many trials they have endured in recent years. Indeed, European winegrowers have shown themselves to be resilient in the face of the COVID-19 crisis, Trump taxes, the growing impact of climate change, new environmental rules and diversified societal expectations.
They will continue to be at the forefront of the search for concrete, sustainable solutions for the future of their profession and winegrowing regions. AREV is ready to work closely with the Commissioner to build together a strong, resilient European wine sector that is in step with the challenges of tomorrow.
