AREV welcomes the temporary suspension of tariffs for the wine sector and urges further steps towards the resolution of the conflict

The AREV has welcomed the temporary agreement reached yesterday between the EU and the USA about the temporary suspension of tariffs on wine products.

Although it is a moratorium of only 4 months, far from the 9 months that AREV had requested both from the EU and President-elect Joe Biden, for this transitional period of renegotiation of trade relations between the two countries, it is a sign of the efforts and the change of tone in relations between Europe and the United States.

This first step it as a great start to continue laying the foundations for the construction of a new trade relationship between the United States and the European Union.

The temporary suspension of the tariffs on wine products, implemented as matter of urgency, will allow regaining at least a glimmer of hope in this severe crisis in the sector, which has caused great damage to the wine sector without been the origin, and which has been further aggravated by the COVID 19 pandemic.

There is no need to remind you that the USA is Europe’s biggest importer of wine.

The AREV trusts in the goodwill of the EU and the US to complete the “internal procedures” to implement this temporary measure as a matter of urgency, and it is necessary to continue, without delay, the dialogue in the search for the establishment of a new positive scenario in trade relations.
